Losing Facial Volume? Here's How to Look Younger With Dermal Fillers

Losing Facial Volume? Here's How to Look Younger With Dermal Fillers

Beautiful, youthful, uplifted skin is no accident. When we’re young, our skin is supported by plentiful and strong strands of the protein collagen. Collagen forms the matrix of our skin, while another protein, elastin, keeps it pliable and elastic.

As we age, however, our bodies stop producing enough collagen and elastin to replace the proteins that have worn out. We lose about 1% of our collagen every year once we pass age 18. In addition, we lose the supportive fat underneath our facial skin and sometimes even the underlying bone structure that holds it all up.

At Radiance Dermatology in Bethesda, Maryland, Dr. Omolara Olowoyeye and our entire team are committed to helping you look as youthful, luminous, and energized as you feel That’s why we offer a wide range of dermal fillers to restore volume to your face and hands.

Create more lift

If your face sags, or if you have jowls or the beginnings of a turkey neck, a liquid facelift with dermal fillers takes up the slack. Dermal fillers from the Restylane® and Juvederm® collections use hyaluronic acid (HA) to add volume and lift to your mid-face for an instant pick-me-up.

Hyaluronic acid is a thick, gooey substance that our body produces to keep our skin moisturized and our joints lubricated. Dermal fillers use a synthetic form of HA, but the effect is the same: HA attracts and retains moisture to create volume and lift in your skin.

In addition, we offer another type of dermal filler called Sculptra® Aesthetic that works as a long-term collagen stimulator. Although Sculptra is an injectable gel — like the HA fillers — the gel doesn’t contain HA. It contains microparticles of a biocompatible material called poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA).

The gel in Sculptra creates immediate volume, but that dissipates within a few days. Don’t’ worry, though: The real effects take place over time as your body absorbs the PLLA and replaces it with collagen and elastin.

Over weeks to months, your skin rebuilds itself with new collagen and elastin that’s yours to keep. You may need about three treatment sessions over three months to get the full restoration you wish. Results last about two years.

Dr. Olowoyeye may also layer HA fillers over Sculptra. In this way, you get the best of both worlds: Immediate volume that lasts for months and gradual volume that lasts for years.

Fill in the lines

In addition to restoring overall facial volume, when necessary, Dr. Olowoyeye may target injectable therapies to particular areas of trouble. For instance, using various consistences of Juvéderm and Restylane, she can plump fill in and erase:

Dr. Olowoyeye may also recommend Restylane to add more volume to the backs of your hands, so that they match the youthfulness of your restored face.

Seal it with a kiss

If you only have the budget for one type of dermal filler restoration, Dr. Olowoyeye recommends restoring your lip volume. Thinning lips are a subtle yet recognizable hallmark of aging. Simply plumping your lips again with a dermal filler gives your face instant radiance and youth.

You may also want to add extra volume for an extra-kissable pout. Dr. Olowoyeye simply chooses the right consistency of dermal filler to get the effect you want.
